Tips And Hints

Try using cascaded compression on your mix

Many compressors don't do a very good job with a complex program mix, but if you let multiple stages of compression share the task, you can get good results. Rather than mix to the Main LR bus, mix instead to submix buses (say, 7 & 8). Apply stereo compresssion to the bus. Now route that bus to the Main LR bus, and apply more stereo compression to the Main LR bus. One of the compressors should probably have fairly slow attack/release times, the other should be fast. This allows each compression stage to specialize in either overall smoothing or peak-limiting — if you'd tried to do everything with a single stage of compression, you'd likely have audible artifacts. Experiment with the settings to get what you like, saving your favorites in the dynamics library.
